NYC First Lady Chirlane McCray is Hosting Free Baby Showers

NYC First Lady Chirlane McCray aims to reach high-need populations with free baby showers for new and expecting parents and caregivers as part of the NYC Baby Showers series, according to the NYC Children’s Cabinet.

The first baby shower of 2017 will be held on Saturday, March 11 at Monsignor Scanlan High School in the Throggs Neck section of the Bronx, according to SILive.com. Four other showers will be held between March and June and are aimed to reach targeted, high-need populations, including immigrant communities and women in shelters.

The baby showers will provide items and education for new and expecting parents. Diapers, clothing, and baby supplies will be distributed, along with information about children’s health resources and connecting to city and community services, such as signing up for a library card or child care services. This Saturday, McCray will read the book Love is Love—an original baby book published by Scholastic to encourage early childhood development.

The NYC Baby Showers are part of the NYC Children’s Cabinet’s Talk to Your Baby campaign to promote healthy brain development and encourage parents to sing, read, and talk to their babies. The campaign was developed with support from the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, and campaign partners include Scholastic Inc., The Clinton Foundation, and Sesame Street.

"A child's emotional resilience and educational success begin with loving parents and caregivers," McCray told SILive.com. "Our NYC Baby Shower Series brings communities together and provides families with books and other resources to help prepare their children for a bright future."
