Families Will Learn How to Protect the Environment at this Walk in Congers

Spend a day enjoying nature and learning about green living at the Sustainability Walk and Showcase in Congers!

The Cornell Cooperative Extension of Rockland County will host its inaugural Sustainability Walk and Showcase in early October. The goal of the event is to encourage people to enjoy nature and gain a greater understanding about our environment and how to protect it, while also providing a fun day of activities.

More than 100 people are expected to attend and tour beautiful Congers Lake, normally open only to Clarkstown residents. Families and individuals can stop at each of the nine unique educational stations along the walk and learn about the ecology of that spot from volunteers. Then people can learn the latest about green products and services from Rockland companies in the Pavilion Showcase. Local environmental organizations will also be there to let people know about their work and volunteer opportunities.

The event will feature stations where adults and kids can learn about birds, bugs, and biodiversity. The station topics will include Invasive Plants, Insects and Ticks, Native Plants and Forest Trees, Animals Around the Lake, Water Quality and Algae Blooms, Water Plants, Water Birds, and a Background and History of the Lake. There will be a scavenger hunt and other activities for kids and booths where parents can learn about environmentally friendly products and services.

“We are excited to bring this nature-focused event to Rockland residents and not only highlight the beautiful Congers Lake and local flora and fauna, but also provide an educational opportunity for all ages,” said Suzanne Barclay, executive director of Cornell Cooperative Extension of Rockland County
