Ridge Hill Shopping Center Hosts Movie Series and Welcomes Community Garden

Ridge Hill opened the gates to its new community garden, located at the center's South Lawn, on April 26 this year. The South Lawn will also serve as the location for this year's Summer Movie Series. The lawn is located near the Whole Foods at the south end of the complex.

In addition to shopping, dining, and movies, the Ridge Hill center puts on a variety of events for the community throughout the year, including its annual Summer Movie Series. This year, the series will run for a total of five weeks, two weeks longer than last year. It started on July 9 and ends on August 6. Families can now gather comfortably on the South Lawn and enjoy a special viewing of a kid-friendly film on a large outdoor screen every Monday. Movies on the line-up this summer are The Lego Batman Movie, Paddington 2, Coco, Beauty and the Beast, and Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle.

This year, attendants are welcomed to set up chairs in addition to blankets. The event will begin at 7pm and visitors can enjoy a range of activities before the movie starts at sunset, including food and drink vendors set up by the various restaurants at Ridge Hill.

Built in partnership with Kaleidoscope Garden Design, Lowe’s Home Improvement, Habitat for Humanity, and students from Yonkers High School, the Ridge Hill community garden opened its gates on April 26 of this year. The 20 by 100 feet plot on the South Lawn grows herbs, vegetables, and other types of plants, and on Thursdays from 12pm to 2pm and certain Sundays from 10am to 3pm, kids of all ages can stop by the garden and participate in hands-on educational workshops and activities. Instructors from Kaleidoscope Garden Design teach participants about the various kinds of plants grown and guide them in effective planting, weeding, harvesting, and mulching. Kids also have the opportunity to sample some of the food grown in the garden.

“It’s a true community process,” says Meghann Hongach, marketing director at Ridge Hill. “The idea is to feel a sense of ownership and community, to play a role in this ongoing project. There is always something fresh and something new to see”

At the end of the summer, Ridge Hill plans to donate the food harvested from the community garden to Feeding Westchester, a non-profit organization aimed at providing hunger relief in the Westchester area.

Ridge Hill is located on 1 Ridge Hill Blvd, Yonkers
